The establishment of a natural bee farming enterprise was started at Uitdrift in 2017. Pine Langstroth beehives are used. The Langstroth can generate the highest honey yield, due to its sheer dimensions as well as the option to add boxes easier. Our bees collect from the local Fynbos, which is located in a remote area with no commercial farming in the area of collection. We also do not feed or medicate our bees at all. The biology of the Cape honeybee is remarkable with the exigencies of the fynbos biome.
Currently we are experimenting with additional boxes on top of the existing ones, thus adding considerable volume to our bees’ living quarters. Bees are able to see ultraviolet light that we humans are not able to see, and they are apparently very attracted to blue. We have therefore decided to paint the roofs of a few of our beehives blue to experiment. We place our hives on uniquely designed beehive stands in an effort to keep honey bee predators at bay.
