About Uitdrift
What is in the name Uitdrift? – debris; driftwood; flotsam; people considered to be worthless; people rejected by society; jetsam; away; in the open air; no longer detained; middle of nowhere; enclosed; hidden.
Translation of the Dutch word Uitdrift poses many a question. Drift is defined as land deposited in small particles or other material worn or broken away from a mass, as by the action of water or glacial ice. These grains of sediments are cemented together to form our beautiful mountains.
Perhaps the true meaning of the name Uitdrift lies in the Out (Uit) part of the word. The dictionary translates the term ‘out’ as, amongst others, situated or operating in the open air; away from buildings; no longer detained in prison; situated far or at a particular distance from somewhere; in the middle of nowhere; moving or appearing to move away from a particular place, especially one that is enclosed or hidden.
Uitdrift is a sacred, safe place where the alluvium found new owners in 2016, the van Rooyen family, who are willing to be social outcasts in order to live in harmony with nature and for what they believe 🙂
